 Manual of Bodily Health?

My POR character party found the Manual of Bodily Health some time ago, but I haven't gotten around to using it yet. Could someone remind me of the procedure for using it, and just when the effect is supposed to kick in? (I think I remember reading somewhere that you're supposed to have a character READY it while encamped in an inn, USE it, and then REST for 30 days; it then is supposed to increase that character's Constitution by 1, and (if the PC was a Dwarf with a CON of 19 already) may also allow the PC to regenerate HP (like a troll).) I've read elsewhere, though, that the effect may not kick in until one has completed another mission. Have I remembered the procedure for using this item correctly? Does the increase in CON (assuming it works) carry over into Curse of the Azure Bonds? If anyone can help with this, I'd certainly appreciate it! ;vkng;

Hi,

this is what I found on a different page:
"If you find "The Manual of Bodily Health" you can use it to raise your constitution. To use this go to an Inn. READY and USE the Manual. Immediately rest for 31 UNINTERRUPTED days. Your CON will increase by 1."

I don't know more, since I don't think I ever got it to work for me.

Regards,
Kurna

I'd only been resting for 30 days before, so I tried 31 this time. Hasn't made any difference yet; however, my party still needs to report completion of another mission (in this case, clearing Stojanow Gate), so maybe doing that is important, too. I'll check in the morning on that (need to sleep for nowemoticon. I've kept a separate saved-game file from just before I tried this, so if I decide this artifact is just not worth all the fuss, I can go back to it. ;pi;

I didn't realize the manual of bodily health was such a useful item. Will have to try that out next time I play poolrad. So if a dwarf already has 19 for CON, and he uses the manual he gets the ability to regenerate? Will his CON reach 20 also?

I wonder what other special & out of the oridinary were in the game.

Is the Illuminator’s gold foil (also found at Mendor's Library) really completely useless? or does it have a purpose?

Re: Manual of Bodily Health?

There's a YouTube 5-part review/walkthrough of POR (I think by dfortae) where I saw the claim that using the Manual of Bodily Health could increase a dwarf's constitution from 19 to 20 and enable him to regenerate HPs. I tried resting in an inn for 31 days after readying & using the Manual, however, and even after completing another mission, my dwarf's CON didn't go up. ar;
Now I'm trying to do Valhigen Graveyard (using the N end of the Kovel Mansion area as my party's place to rest & heal in between trips). I've tried several times entering the building where the spectre is supposed to be creating more skeletons -- no spectre! re+ If I complete everything else (including destroying the vampire), is not having found the skeleton-creating spectre going to mess up my party's completing this area?

Hi,

when I googled for it, I found several walk throughs and comments on PoR. Most thought the manual doesn't work at all. Two (including the one I cited) said it does work in giving you +1 on CON. But none mentioned the regeneration effect, so I would be sceptic about that.

Regarding the graveyard:
It's been a while, but have you defeated the vampire twice? Also the spectre might be in a secret compartment of the building. Nevertheless I am quite sure you should get the reward for clearing the graveyard without destroying the spectre. Killing the vampire should be the trigger for that.

Re: Manual of Bodily Health?

The manual of bodily health can raise anyones con to 255 if you kept getting them with repeat play throughs or duplicating items. Not that it would really do a whole lot of good; the extra HP for con 19+ is broken. Try making a first level dwarf fighter, they top out at 14 hp, can can only gain 14 hp per level. Raise the con to 20, it doesn't even give you the +4 bonus, there's nothing in the tables for it.

Side note, there is regeneration in the game, heck, it even displays regeneration in the magic-> display menu in camp with some forms of it. If you set an item's magic properties to 3B/81 it enabled regeneration of 7 hp/hour, they happen all at once. Each item in the .itm file is 64 bytes in size, it's the last type bytes you want to change.

so if you modify multiple items to regenerate and equipped them you could get the number of items equipped * 7 HP regenerated per hour?

When I find this item after my 20th time through the game, I use the copy cheat to make enough for all my characters to get to 25 con, once they get to 20 con they start to regen. its like 1/6 turns at 20 and at 25 its 1/1 turn. 1 turn=10 minutes.

Hey that's a neat trick. Speaking of regenerating, its likely also possible to create items that regenerate (in Gateway to the Savage Frontier) by using Simeon Pilgrim's hacked Gateway .exe file

There are some Troll / Regeneration related items, probably something that Vaalgamon used to regenerate himself. It's sort of trial and error creating items, but you can create a whole lot of interesting stuff with it. See some of the items of this party.
