Item creation in Gateway


I'm curious if anyone else has gotten into item creation in Gateway. Does anyone have a rundown of the #'s of specials as seen in image below? I'm pretty sure they are for items that have spell effects like wands of magic missles etc. Curious if anyone has a listing of what numbers cast what spells etc.

OK so I tried out different #'s in the specials and found that the middle # special field is used for spells. Spells in the specials appear to be ordered in the same way that you might see when a cleric/magic-user with all available spells on the memorization screen.

Starting with Clerical level 1 spells, then Magic-User level 1 spells, onward.

Item specials that I have tested successfully are...

An item with Specials 0 1 0 = (u)se in battle, will cast bless

0 2 0 =Curse
0 3 0 =Cure Light Wounds
0 4 0 =Cause Light Wounds
...
0 12 0 =Enlarge

I made an item (Huge Shield), which when (u)sed can casts the Enlarge spell as shown in the image below.

Similarly, the (Club of Healing) can be (u)sed to cast Cure Light Wounds.

The other fields to the left or the right of the spell field are likely + to hit versus certain creatures, or perhaps for items like effects like displacement cloaks or ion stones, but I'm not positive on that yet.

A lot of Gold Box decryption was done at the FRUA forum:
FRUA & Dungeon Craft Community Forum
Including the item.dat and items.dat files.
Hacked version of Gateway.exe presumably came from the Hacking UA sub-forum of this site. Simeon Pilgrim worked it all out.

Specifically,

           1-127 = Item is Scroll (bytes 14-16 give codes

           129 = Item is Ring of Wizardry
           (byte 15 = 0)
           131 = Item is Gauntlets of Ogre Power
           (byte 15 = 0)
           133 = Item is Girdle of Giant Strength
           (byte 15 = Str - 18)

Byte 17: Always set to zero



Now, upon creating a (Ring of Giant Strength) by setting Special #'s to

0 0 133

, and have given it to Una, my Halfling Fighter/Thief...

It will change her strength from 14

to a giant strengthened 18(00)...

Thanks Ishad! I do check at the UA forums but sometimes I get overwhelmed with all of the hacking stuff and don't always find what I am looking for or how it relates to what I am doing but in this case it seems to have worked perfect.

FRUA was a Gold Box game but it was different to the others in many ways. Events are an example where things are handled very differently indeed! Notes on FRUA events would do you no good in reading an Ecl.dax file from Gateway.
Luckily for you the items are an area of minimal change.
If you register with the Reonis forum, when you are logged in (and only then) you will be able to access all sorts of files and programs created by Simeon Pilgrim, Gold Box Fan, myself and others.

It's in the hacked .exe

Was not part of the original game release though I'd imagine that the original game testers had access to all of this as you can disable/re-enable combat and jump from location to location and fight any monster available in the game via the arena.

Simeon P did not say how much he had to alter the GSF program. The keys for the Gold Box cheat codes were found in the "Gold Box games cheat codes" topic over at Reonis.com.

Holy Crap!

I didn't realize that besides the FRUA forums, that Reonis.com also had so much Re: Demise: Rise of the Ku'tan.

Interesting. emoticon

I haven't gotten around to playing Demise yet, but have played Mordor and the Devil Whiskey. Fun stuff.

Anyways, re: the Gateway Hack, read through and obtain the hacked exe file from here
Alternatively, the hacked gateway exe file is also available on the weekendwastemonster Gateway to the Savage Frontier Page
